Koblenz, August 2026. The International Violoncello Society (IVS) is launching a new initiative dedicated to the long-term development of exceptional young cellists. At its heart is a concept that deliberately goes beyond the traditional masterclass: outstanding young musicians will not only receive occasional instruction, but will be supported artistically over an extended period, connected with experienced musical figures, and guided through the crucial steps toward a professional career in music.
The program will officially launch with an Academy taking place from December 14–17, 2026, at the State Music Academy of Rhineland-Palatinate. The mentors will be the internationally renowned cellist and educator Frans Helmerson, alongside cellist, co-founder, and President of the IVS, Benedict Kloeckner.
An artistic journey that goes far beyond the masterclass
The International Violoncello Society is responding to a challenge faced by many highly talented young musicians: artistic excellence alone does not guarantee a successful transition from studies to a sustainable international career.
This is precisely where the IVS steps in. Alongside intensive artistic work, the program includes public concerts, personal encounters with established artists, connections with conductors, agencies, and chamber music partners, as well as tailored guidance on artistic positioning and career development.
The Society does not see itself as a replacement for music universities or existing masterclasses, but rather as a long-term complement. Its aim is to foster relationships between influential figures in the music world and a new generation of cellists, while creating a space for technical and artistic development as well as new professional opportunities.

Frans Helmerson as Mentor to the First Generation
With Frans Helmerson, the International Violoncello Society welcomes one of the most influential cellists and educators on the international music scene for its inaugural program. The collaboration between established artistic figures and exceptional young talents will be a core element of the Society’s work going forward.
The first generation of the IVS will launch in 2026. Participants will be selected through an application process. In addition to a biography and personal statement, applicants will submit three videos featuring different works. The selection criteria will focus not only on technical ability, but also on artistic personality, development potential, and a willingness to pursue and shape their own long-term artistic path.
Support Beyond the Academy
In the long term, the International Violoncello Society aims to build an international network of artists, alumni, patrons, and partners. Scholarships and private funding will help ensure that exceptionally talented young musicians can access the program regardless of their financial circumstances.
Patrons and companies will also become part of this network. Their support will directly contribute to nurturing the next generation of cellists through scholarships, artistic projects, and performance opportunities.
